AutoCAD Mechanical 2006 packs powerful tools that accelerate mechanical design projects by automating common tasks. Based on the AutoCAD® platform, it offers the native DWG that your teams need to easily share design data with other AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor® users. But it goes well beyond the capabilities of AutoCAD software, offering significant productivity increases for 2D mechanical design.
AutoCAD Mechanical packages also include Autodesk Vault, Autodesk's data management solution.

New features in AutoCAD Mechanical 2006 includes :
- Associative 2D Hide:
- Visual workflow for managing individual hidden lines.
- Single browser entry in the mechanical structure makes it easy to manage hidden lines and options, and order for parts and entire assemblies.
- Results in drastically reducing the time required to create and edit hidden lines in drawings.
- Autodesk Inventor Associativity for Parts and Assemblies:
- Directly open an Autodesk Inventor file (IPT or IAM) in AutoCAD Mechanical will automatically create a link. Any changes made to the linked 3D Autodesk Inventor models are immediately reflected in the 2D AutoCADR Mechanical drawing. The link also provides access to important design metadata, such as the bill of materials (BOM) or drawing title, for easy updating.
- New Drafting Tools:
- Drafting environment improves by updated standards, such as DIN section lines, JIS feature control frames, and much more.
- New set of dimensions extends support for international standards within AutoCAD Mechanical, with additions of arc length, jogged radii, flip arrow, and many more.
- New heads-up design mode that enables you to enter commands directly in model space.
- 2D Mechanical Structure Sample Migration Tool:
- Sample migration tool supports conversion of blocks to mechanical structure. Allows you to reuse existing data by migrating it to 2D mechanical structure.

The following requirements apply to AutoCADR Mechanical software.
Additional system requirements are necessary to run the Autodesk® Vault Server/Client.
Please note that MicrosoftR XP Starter Edition and Tablet Edition are not supported at this time.
This configuration is suggested primarily for detail-drafting activities, moderate use of the standard parts, and small 2D assemblies fewer than 100 parts.
- IntelR PentiumR III or later, with 1 Ghz or faster processor, or compatible
- MicrosoftR WindowsR XP Professional or Home Edition (SP1 or SP2) or Windows 2000 SP4
- 512 MB RAM (1 GB or greater recommended when running the Autodesk Vault Client)
- 1 GB of free disk space
- 32 MB OpenGL graphics card, 1280x1024x32-bit true color or better (Minimum is 1024x768 VGA with true color)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 or later
Recommended System Requirements:
This configuration is suggested for production-level 2D assembly modeling (hundreds of parts or more) with heavy use of standard parts, associative 2D hide, or Autodesk InventorR associativity.
- Intel Pentium 4 or later, with 1.8 Ghz or faster processor, or compatible
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Home Edition (SP1 or SP2) or Windows 2000 SP4
- 1 GB or more RAM
- 1 GB of free disk space
- 64 MB or more OpenGL work-station class graphics card, 1280x1024x32-bit true color or better (Minimum is 1024x768 VGA with true color)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 or later
